Public institution »Maksimir« was founded in 1994 by a Decree on establishing Public institution »Maksimir« (Službeni glasnik Grada Zagreba, 12/94, 23/03 i 20/05) which was issued by Zagreb City Council based on the Law on nature protection (Narodne novine, 70/05). The City of Zagreb is the founder and owner of the Institution.

The Institution was entered in court register of Commercial court in Zagreb on March 22, 1999 and since than it has a status of corporation, and begun working in 2000.

Institution's activities are protection, maintenance and promotion of Park Maksimir, monument of park architecture with the goal of protecting and preserving nature's origin, securing undisturbed natural processes and sustainable utilization of natural resources, as well as monitoring maintenance of conditions and measures of nature protection. The Institution performs this activity as public service.

Institution's headquarters used to be in Zagreb, Petrova 116. At the beginning of 2005 Institution moved its headquarters to Zagreb, Maksimirski perivoj bb, in former auxiliary object of a large restaurant located in the vicinity of the main entrance (portal) of Park Maksimir from the direction of Maksimirska road, where it is located until today.
