STEAMBOAT ZAGREB CITY
Mayor of Sesvete and public representative of Dugo Selo Marko
Mileusnić ordered from Vienna a small petroleum steamboat 8 meters
long with an awning. Steamboat was named Zagreb
City. On September
14, 1892 steamboat was christened and the godfather was city senator
Đuro Deželić. The same day steamboat sailed down first Maksimir
lake. The starting point of the steamboat was on the west banks
of the first Maksimir lake, near Echo pavilion. Sailing direction
was around the island and back to the starting point. Steamboat
was a big attraction for the visitors of Park Maksimir, which visited
it in large numbers, and especially after September 1891 when Zagreb
got its first horse tram known under the name Konjka (konj = horse).
Tram circulated from the terminal in Marija Valerija street (today
Praška) to the inn in Maksimir (almost opposite of the main entrance
/portal/ of Park Maksimir). Unfortunately, financial construction
was the reason why the steamboat did not sail very long down Maksimir's
lakes. It sailed only on Sundays, often had repairs, machinist
had to be paid – those were all the reasons why the steamboat disappeared
from the first lake in Park Maksimir for good.
